William was a farmer. It appeared that he had worked for a time at Summerville Rockley, the property of the Clements family and he was mentioned in the Clements diary as early as 1846. It is understood that William was thrown from his horse after a cat (that was in a bag being carried by William) scratched the horse in terror. Williams back was broken by the fall. He recovered but became quite aggressive during his recovery.
