Henry Charles Gaudry (1909 – 1998)

Henry was born in Clermont om 19/12/1909.

He married to Avice Constance Powell on 18/12/1937 in St John’s Cathedral Brisbane. Avice was born in Rockhampton on 19/05/1916.

They had 2 children:

  • Lois Marjorie Gaudry (1932 –       )

  • Garth Ian Gaudry (1941 – 2012)

Henry died on 21/09/1998 in Mt Olivet Hospital Brisbane.

Avice died on 12/10/1999 in Tricare Annerley Brisbane.

 

Garth Ian Gaudry (1941 – 2012)

Emeritus Professor Garth Gaudry died in Sydney on 18 October 2012 after a long battle with a brain tumour. Those of us in the mathematical community will remember him for different reasons; as research collaborators, as a friend, a teacher, lover of red wine, rugby, music and many other things. Above all he will be remembered for leadership in promoting mathematical sciences in the community and politically.

A numbers man for all reasons

2018-04-05One of the highlights of Garth Gaudry’s life in mathematics was a special student named Terry Tao. Tao came to him at the age of 12 and, with Gaudry’s guidance, entered Princeton University at the age of 17. In 2006 Tao was awarded the Fields Medal, considered the Nobel prize of mathematics, a moment of great delight for Gaudry.
